About Fiveboxes
Five boxes. Five minutes a day.
The short version
Fiveboxes is a flashcard app built on the manual Leitner system — five boxes you can see, instead of an algorithm you can't. Studying is free forever, sessions actually end, and if you ever want more there is exactly one price, paid exactly once.
What Fiveboxes is
Fiveboxes is a vocabulary study platform built on the Leitner box system, the 50-year-old memory technique that still beats most study apps. Every card lives in one of five boxes. Answer it correctly and it moves up a box; get it wrong and it goes back to Box 1; answer it correctly one more time in Box 5 and it is mastered. That's the whole method — no black-box scheduling algorithm deciding for you, no "due pile" that piles up while you sleep. You see all five boxes and you choose which one to study.
Sessions that actually end
Open a box and you get a session: a random draw of up to 20 cards from that box, each shown exactly once, with a progress dial that counts up to done. When it ends, it ends. That bounded, five-minute shape is what turns studying from a guilt pile into a daily habit.
What you get
- Three study modes built on Active Recall: classic flip cards, practice questions you answer from memory, and multiple choice with wrong answers drawn from your own deck — with full keyboard shortcuts.
- A motivation loop that respects you: daily streaks, accuracy stats, mastered counts, and a refresh mode for keeping mastered cards sharp.
- Curated starter decks you can add in one click, so the first session is minutes away.
- Your data stays yours: CSV import and export, and account deletion on request.
- Simple accounts: sign in with email or Google.
Pricing, the honest version
There are two plans and no subscription. The free plan is genuinely usable forever: up to 3 decks, 100 self-created cards, 1 starter deck, 30 days of statistics history, CSV export, and the full study experience — all five boxes, all three study modes, streaks and progress. The limits only apply to creating new things; everything you have already made keeps studying forever, free.
The Lifetime plan is one payment of $29 — a founder price for the first 100 users, then it goes up. It unlocks unlimited decks and cards, all starter decks, CSV import, full statistics history, and every future premium feature. It is tied to your email with no device limits, comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, and checkout is handled securely by Lemon Squeezy. Compare that to the usual $36–60 per year, forever, elsewhere.
One commitment we make in writing, here and in our terms: reviewing cards you have added will never be moved behind a paywall.
Why we built it
Most flashcard apps hide the method behind an opaque algorithm and hide the price behind a subscription. We think the opposite is more effective and more respectful: a method you can see and trust, a daily commitment small enough to actually keep, and a price you pay once. Honest method, honest sessions, honest pricing.
